Type 2 AC Charging in Singapore
Type 2 (Mennekes) is the standard AC charging connector in Singapore. Perfect for overnight, workplace, and destination charging where you have a few hours to spare.
What is Type 2 AC Charging?
Type 2 (also known as Mennekes) is the European standard for AC charging. It is the most common connector for slow and semi-fast AC charging in Singapore, used in HDB carparks, condominiums, workplaces, and shopping malls.
Unlike CCS2 which delivers DC power directly to the battery, Type 2 AC sends alternating current to the car's onboard charger, which then converts it to DC. This means the charging speed is limited by your car's onboard charger capacity — typically 7–11 kW for most EVs.
Typical Charging Speeds
- 7 kW: Adds ~40 km per hour — standard for most HDB and condo chargers
- 11 kW: Adds ~60 km per hour — common at workplaces and newer developments
- 22 kW: Adds ~120 km per hour — requires three-phase power, less common in Singapore
A typical EV with a 50 kWh battery takes 7–8 hours to fully charge at 7 kW, making Type 2 ideal for overnight charging.
Type 2 Charging Prices in Singapore
Type 2 AC charging is generally cheaper per kWh than DC fast charging because the infrastructure costs are lower. This makes it the most economical option for overnight and workplace charging.
