Understanding the Real Cost Difference
The most significant factor in the home vs public charging decision is the per-kWh electricity rate. Singapore's regulated residential electricity tariff, set by SP Group and revised quarterly, is currently around $0.32 per kWh before GST (about $0.35 per kWh with GST) as of Q3 2026. Check the SP Group website for the latest tariff. This rate reflects the cost of generating and transmitting electricity to your home. In contrast, public charging operators must cover infrastructure installation, maintenance, network connectivity, and billing systems, which is why public AC chargers typically cost $0.45–$0.82 per kWh, while DC fast chargers can reach $0.55–$0.89 per kWh based on operator-published rate cards as of mid-2026.
However, the upfront cost of a home charger is substantial. A standard 7.4 kW wallbox unit plus installation by a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) typically costs $2,000–$4,500 for a landed home with a straightforward cable run, with most all-in quotes around $3,000–$4,500. Condo installations usually require MCST approval and can range from $2,500–$8,500 depending on cable distance and electrical capacity.
Public charging offers flexibility that home charging cannot match. DC fast chargers (50 kW and above) can charge most EVs from 10% to 80% in roughly 30–60 minutes — much faster than a 7 kW home charger that takes 6–10 hours for a full charge. For drivers who make occasional long trips or who cannot install a home charger, public charging is the practical choice. The key is to use the cheapest charger finder to avoid overpaying at premium locations.
Another consideration is idle fees. Major operators such as SP Mobility and Shell Recharge charge $0.50 per minute after a grace period if your car remains plugged in after charging completes, capped at $40 per session. This penalty does not exist with home charging. Conversely, public charging session fees, parking charges during charging, and the cost of driving to and from the charger all add up. Installing a Home EV Charger in Singapore
Installing a home EV charger in Singapore involves several steps, but the process is straightforward if you follow the right procedure.
- Check your electrical capacity: Contact a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) to assess if your home's electrical panel can support an EV charger. Most homes can support a 7 kW charger; 22 kW may require an upgrade.
- Choose your charger: Popular brands in Singapore include wallbox units from SP Mobility, Charge+, Wallbox, Schneider, and third-party providers. A basic 7 kW unit typically costs $800–$1,500 before installation.
- Apply for installation: Engage a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) to submit the installation plan and notify SP PowerGrid of the additional electrical load.
- Installation: A licensed electrician will install the charger, typically taking 2–4 hours. For a landed home with a straightforward cable run, total installed cost is typically $2,000–$4,500 (most 7.4kW AC installs fall around $3,000–$4,500). Condo installs usually require MCST approval and can range from $2,500–$8,500.
- Activation: Once installed, the charger connects to your home Wi-Fi or Ethernet for smart charging features and usage tracking.

If you live in a condo or landed property: Install a home charger if you plan to keep your EV for more than 2 years. The payback period is short, and the convenience of waking up to a full battery every morning is unmatched. A 7 kW AC charger is sufficient for most drivers — you will rarely need more than an overnight top-up for daily commuting.
If you live in an HDB flat: Monitor the LTA HDB EV charging rollout to see when chargers arrive at your carpark. In the meantime, identify 2–3 reliable public chargers near your home or workplace using our interactive map. Prioritise HDB carpark chargers over mall chargers — they are typically 15–25% cheaper per kWh.
If you drive less than 500 km/month: Public charging is likely more cost-effective, as the upfront installation cost of a home charger may not be justified.
